Chief Executive Officer

The Rediscovery Centre is recruiting for a Chief Executive Officer.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will be responsible for setting the overall strategic direction and managing the operational activities of the Centre, as the national centre for the circular economy in Ireland. Leading the Rediscovery Centre’s team of approximately 60 permanent, trainee, temporary, and volunteer staff, the CEO will bring exceptional leadership abilities and a professional background that enables an immediate, positive impact on the organisation and the wider sector.

This role offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of the transformative movement towards a circular economy, driving positive behavioural change across Ireland. The ideal candidate will possess strong financial, operational, and people management skills, complemented by sharp commercial insight and a deep commitment to delivering meaningful social and environmental outcomes.
As the most senior role in the organisation, the CEO will embody and uphold the Rediscovery Centre’s values, fostering an inspiring work environment and collaboratively shaping the organisation’s future vision.

Principal duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Safeguarding, developing and executing the organisation’s strategic vision and long-term and short-term goals in collaboration with the executive team
  • Supporting continued organisational growth and the development of the circular economy in Ireland
  • Assisting the executive team in developing short- and long-term plans, identifying business opportunities, and implementing impact programmes aligned with strategic objectives
  • Actively promoting the Rediscovery Centre’s mission to lead Ireland’s transition to a circular economy and sustainable future
  • Building and managing strong relationships with the local community and other stakeholders, including board members, funders, customers, beneficiaries and staff
  • Ensuring the successful review, measurement, evaluation and reporting of company-wide impact across social, economic and environmental parameters.
  • Establishing prioritisation strategies to oversee the effective management of multiple complex projects.
  • Managing financial sustainability and performance, overseeing budget allocation, cash flow, and expenditure in accordance with company and statutory financial procedures.
  • Upholding corporate and charity governance, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and best practices, and safeguarding the organisation’s reputation.
  • Assessing and addressing risk by designing and implementing effective mitigation strategies
  • Serving as the organisation's primary representative and main point of contact for communication with the board, key stakeholders, government entities, and the public
  • Attracting, developing, retaining, motivating, and managing staff to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of strategic goals
  • Identifying and cultivating strategic opportunities and collaborative partnerships within the sector and local communities.
  • Fostering a culture of creativity and innovation throughout the organisation
  • Performing other duties as necessary to ensure the effective operation of the organization.

Core competencies:

Essential:

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in a senior management position in a not for profit and/or social enterprise organisation
  • Knowledge of and passion for climate/social issues and the circular economy
  • Proven track record in managing diverse workplaces
  • Outstanding leadership and people management skills
  • Strong business acumen with proficiency in governance and financial control
  • Highly advanced decision-making, problem-solving, prioritisation and delegation capabilities
  • Excellent communication skills with a track record in managing internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to inspire confidence and build trust

Additional Desirable skills:

  • Working knowledge of environmental and social policy
  • Previous experience of managing public funds and/or grants
  • Experience of managing organisational change

Context for Appointment of new CEO

The current CEO is stepping down having completed 20 years service. The Rediscovery Centre has a strategic plan 2022-2026 and the implementation of the current plan and the development and delivery of the new plan (2027-2031) will be a key responsibility of the new CEO.

Terms and conditions of employment

Reporting to the Chair of the Board, the CEO will direct a team of 4: Director of Programmes, Director of Policy, Research & Education, Centre Director, & Office Manager.

This is a fixed-term full-time contract of service for 5 years, five days over seven, with a probationary period of 3 months. Salary commensurate with experience and the role. The contract is renewable, subject to available funding.

The role is primarily based at the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun, Dublin 9. Some work outside normal office hours and travel within the EU will be required from time to time.

Based on the information contained in the CV and cover letter, the interview committee will select candidates for interview. Shortlisting will be based on the committee’s assessment of candidates’ suitability as presented in the submitted application only.

First interviews will take place in the week commencing Oct 14th and it is expected that the process will potentially involve additional stages to identify the most suitable person for the role. The ideal candidate will showcase executive-level skills and experience, preferably with a proven history of successful leadership in a similar organisation.
