SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

The Community Based Health in Justice Programme has been operating since 2009 in Irish Prisons under a partnership between the Irish Red Cross (IRC), the Irish Prison Service (IPS) and the Education and Training Boards (ETB). The programme has been successful in improving health & well being in Irish prisons through mobilisation and empowerment of inmate volunteers. As a result, the programme has won numerous awards both Nationally and Internationally which recognise the approach as a model of excellence in addressing public health in prisons.

The Prison to Community Project emerged in 2015 following the request of inmate volunteers transitioning from prison to the community. The programme is a partnership between the IRC, Probation Service and Irish Prison Service. The peer-educator and volunteer model which has proven so effective in the Irish Prison System has been adapted for use in the community. Volunteers are provided opportunities to continue their personal development by completing training in order to become facilitators of CBH workshops, all aimed at fostering peer-to-peer education and networks of support. Workshops take place in Probation Services, Probation Funded Project and Community-Based Organizations and other NGO’s nationally.
