Developing financial capabilities initiatives for Ireland, 25 Oct
Financial wellbeing impacts our physical and mental wellbeing. The cost-of-living crisis has led to more and more people struggling to make ends meet and increased the likelihood of people taking on problem debt. Confronted with these external challenges, there is an opportunity to support people to build skills, knowledge and behaviours to improve their resilience, living standards and ability to navigate uncertainty so that they can be better prepared for financial shocks.
To address this Northside Partnership (NSP) in partnership with Think-tank for Action on Social Change (TASC) and Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS), and with support from J.P. Morgan, began an initiative to develop and deliver a financial capability programme, Money Made Sense (MMS), combining both group training sessions and one-to-one financial coaching.
The pilot programme worked with low-income households in the Northeast suburbs of Dublin between January and December 2021.
This event launches a toolkit and framework for financial capability programmes that was developed through the experience of designing and delivering this project.
During this launch, the panellists, both researchers and programme staff, trainers and participants, will discuss and reflect on the programme’s achievements and what it means for financial capability training in Ireland.
The event will be chaired by Nessan Vaughan: Nessan is Vice-Chair of the National Social Justice Committee and Chair of the Vincentian MESL Research Committee. He is also Chairperson of both MABS and NSP
A keynote address will be given by Senator Marie Sherlock. Marie is a Labour party Senator for Dublin Central, Seanad Whip and Party Spokesperson on Employment Affairs, Media, Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht.

- Angela Shafer, Financial Capabilities Project Co-ordinator, NSP
- Dr Amie Lajoie, Social Policy and Research Executive, MABS
