Date: 5 February until 02 April 2021

Times: Course access from 17.00 (GMT+1) on Monday 15 February until 17.00 (GMT+1) on Friday 02 April 2021

  • This course is eligible for 16 CPD points from The Addiction Counsellors of Ireland.

The course covers a range of areas to provide participants with a good basic knowledge of drugs and alcohol and related issues.

A total of 16 hours should be allocated to complete and fully participate in the course.  Participants will be provided the opportunity to learn about different types of drugs and their effects. The programme will also explore the areas of Tolerance, Dependence and Withdrawal.  Cannabis and alcohol have a module each in this course to reflect their prevalence in society. The impact of addiction on family members is explored as well as treatment options for a person with a substance misuse issue. At the end of each module there is a quiz to evaluate the understanding of the material as you progress through the individual topics.

How it works: The training is composed of six modules, with one module released each week, however participants can still continue to access earlier modules.  There is an online Q&A forum available to learners to pose questions to trainers throughout the course and there is the option of a LIVE one hour interactive session (Saturdays) which is delivered by one of the course authors; either Clinical Psychologist Dr. Seán Foy or Senior Trainer in Addiction Studies Liam O'Loughlin. The session will focus on the module released in the previous week and during the session Seán or Liam will answer the questions posted into the forum during the week and also answer any questions posed live by any attendees. Please note that in order to achieve a certificate in the course participants will be expected to contribute with a question or a comment in a minimum of four out of the six course forums.

Dr. Foy has over 25 years experience of working in the addiction field. He holds qualifications in clinical psychology, social work and psychotherapy. He is a published author and regularly lectures on addiction and mental health both here in Ireland and abroad. Liam O'Loughlin has been working in services for people affected by addiction for 25 years plus and is a subject expert on the negative effects of problematic drug and alcohol use on those around the drinker and/or drug user. He holds a Masters in Drug and Alcohol Policy from Trinity College Dublin.

Suitable for: Anyone who is interested in learning more about drugs and addiction, including nurses, social workers, HR Depts, counsellors, youth care workers and individuals.
