Understanding the challenges of cancer and socio-economic inequality, 8 Nov
This launch event will present the findings from a study supported by MSD Ireland to examine the relationships between socio-economic disadvantage and differential access to diagnosis, treatment and screening for cancer.
Date and time: Tue, 8 November 2022, 11:00 – 12:30 GMT
Location: Buswells Hotel 23-27 Molesworth Street D02 CT80 Dublin 2
Cancers which disproportionally affect those of lower socio-economic status were specifically attended to: lung cancer, head and neck cancer, cervical cancer, and stomach cancer. Cancer risks correlate with socio-economic disadvantage across Ireland, and this study looked at the inequalities that arise along a person’s journey from initial diagnosis through to treatment and survival outcomes.
Over the course of March to June, twenty qualitative interviews were carried out with frontline workers from across different healthcare sites, including cancer support centres, hospitals and community healthcare clinics.
Our overarching aim is to demonstrate ways with which policies could be used to combat the multiple challenges to improving cancer care tied to socio-economic inequality across Ireland. Best practices and proposed supports that could be introduced into the Irish healthcare system are highlighted.
The aim of the launch will be to present our main findings to the public and bring together experts to engage in a discussion highlighting how socio-economic inequalities affect cancer incidence and outcomes.
