Social Innovation Hackathons - 9 to 13 March 2020
SOCIAL INNOVATION HACKATHONS
March 9th – 13th 2020
WHAT IS A HACKATHON?
A hackathon is an event where individuals from multiple sectors work together on short-term projects. These events are intended to be intense, engaging and collaborative. The aim is to inspire, enthuse and ignite an innovative style of thinking in its participants, and help to create concepts which could be turned into new ventures or processes.
DCU has set itself a huge goal – to run 5 day-long hackathons in 5 days. Each day we will run an event which targets a social challenge of importance to the community, allowing our students the change to brainstorm innovative solutions.
THE HACKATHON THEMES
On each of these five days, students will be challenged to formulate innovative and viable ideas that address an issue of national or global importance. Each day will see a new group of students taking part (with 100-130 students taking part each day) and will centre on the following social themes:
- Monday March 9th: Mental Health & Wellbeing
- Tuesday March 10th: Fast Fashion
- Wednesday March 11th: Smarter Travel
- Thursday March 12th: Climate Action & Sustainability
- Friday March 13th: Inclusive Society.
Students will benefit from keynote talks and mentorship from academic and industry specialists in each area, and at the end of each day they will present their ideas to a panel of judges.
Participation is open to all DCU students. The Hackathon also forms a core part of the Business School LIFE course.
